THE TAKEOVER PROJECT

2024 PROGRAM

AWARDED PROJECTS

GALLERY TAKEOVER : 1 MARCH - 23 MARCH 2024

‘BERSERK’, a new dance theatre work led by KIN Co-Director Jag Popham, in collaboration with
Bella Hood, Asher Bowen-Saunders, Gina Tay Limpus, and Ché Pritchard.

During their TAKEOVER, they will bring together a core group of dancers and volunteers to create a somatic exploration of the mythopoetic realm, featuring shapeshifters traversing diverse terrains, undergoing threshold experiences, and crafting an engaging narrative in collaboration with present creative forces. This journey is simultaneously absurd and sincere, inviting the audience to experience the intersection of mythology and the modern body.

Throughout their time at The Old Ambo, they’ll facilitate morning dance classes and workshops, work with volunteers from the Sunshine Coast community, and hold set-building crafternoons. All of this will culminate in our public showing on the 23rd of March.

RAMP SPACE TAKEOVER : 1 MAY - 30 MAY 2024

'Portraits of You’, a project led by photographer Cynthia Lee, invites individuals from all walks of life to join a collaborative exploration of identity through portrait sessions in May 2024.

Participants are encouraged to share personal narratives, dress in their favourite attire, and showcase cherished possessions.
The project culminates in unveiling a self-published Zine during a public launch, documenting each portrait session with individual stories, anecdotes, reflections, and highlights from the 4-week takeover. Through 'Portraits of You,' Cynthia aims to emphasise that each of us has a unique story, and by sharing these narratives, we collectively shape and celebrate our diverse identities.

BLACKBOX TAKEOVER : 1 JULY - 17 August 2024

‘10 000 Steps in a Day’ - Anna Loren

Across the Takeover Residency, Anna Loren will bring together a group of artists, including dramaturg and long-time collaborator Katrina Irawati Graham, to seed a new work for stage titled 10 000 Steps in a Day. Through this work, Loren seeks to explore our relationships with each other and technology in a post-truth world through the interplay of familial communications. Set in an intergenerational Indian-Australian household, the Australia we find ourselves in is one of rising temperatures, environmentally and politically. In a time of 24-hour connectivity, 10 000 Steps in a Day questions our ability to communicate and examines the lengths we will go to to avoid meaningful conversation. Through this creative development, Anna aims to produce a solid first draft of the play, which will be shared with the public in a staged reading at the Blackbox Theatre on August 17.

RAMP SPACE TAKEOVER : 1 NOV - 30 NOV 2024

‘Umbra Opus - Edit’ - Edwin Davies

Umbra Opus is the unpacking. Shadow work through song.
A mixture of improvised and written materials alchemised to a format more easily seen and easier to let go of, playing through the shade over samples and snares. Open rehearsals, circles of open cyphers where all are invited.

With the Takeover, Edit hopes to realise the completion of Umbra Opus as a record and performance piece.
The project also aspires to facilitate the sharing of stories and art of healing through Hip-Hop and spoken word.

This initiative is supported through the Creative Industries Investment Program and is jointly funded by ArtsCoast through Sunshine Coast Council’s Art and Heritage Levy and the Regional Arts Development Fund in partnership with
the Queensland Government.
